In the simplest of terms, a light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. Compared to conventional lighting, for e.g. fluorescent tubes, halogen lamps or metal-halide lighting; the LED device is electronic in nature and typically requires the use of a ballast (or LED power supply) that converts the AC into a DC for the LED chips.

The color rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. Although this method was designed for fluorescent lighting many years ago, and is considered out-dated by many experts in the lighting industry, it remains the most common reference measure for the quality of colour rendering by a light source. The official lifetime (L70) of our products are ALWAYS greater than 50,000 hrs. This is the time it takes for the product’s light output to diminish to <70% of the original light output. Realistically, with the weekly operating hours of a product being less than 24/7, you can expect a useful life well in excess of the 50,000 hrs.

A passive infrared motion sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic sensor that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from moving objects in its field of view. They are typically subject to line-of-sight and work less effectively when there is background heat. Microwave sensors (MW sensor) use pulses of MW frequencies and then measures the reflection of those waves when they return to the sensor. MW sensors sense motion in terms of speed and size as opposed to PIR sensors which sense motion in terms of heat and light. MW sensors can be mounted inside an LED fixture and are therefore protected from dust and water. They cannot, however, see through metals and have a tendancy to be over-sensitive. This can be corrected with the use of a sensitivity switch on the sensor, which can be adjusted for various installation conditions.

IP stands for “Ingress Protection” and is a scale for how resistant a product is to solid and liquid penetration. The first number of the IP rating represents the level of protection against solid, whereas the second number of the IP rating represents the level of protection against liquid. Typically, the higher the number, then the higher the protection the product offers. For example: IP65 describes protection against solid objects- 6; and protection against liquids – 5. The “6” for solids mean: Dust-tight / no ingress of dust. The “5” for liquids mean: Protected against low pressure jets if water from any direction, limited ingress permitted.
